The Yeti – Snowshoe race

The Yeti motivating the snowshoe runners
A couple of weeks ago I received an e-mail from BC mtb bike rock star Andreas, aka Dre, Hestler about joining him at The Yeti snowshoe champs. One of my goals for this year is to do as many cool events as possible until a flying job pops up (flying float planes is what I do to put money in the bank). Dre is one of my favourite characters on the coast so I thought about it for 1 minute and agreed.

The Race took place this past Saturday. I figured with the running and cycling that I have been doing that I could easily get thru the 10 km event without too much trouble if I hung in the middle of the pack. Within minutes of the gun going off I found myself beside the local legends: Dre, Johnny F, Seamus M, and the always competitive Andrew Clarke. I seem to be doing quite well with the snowshoes on the single track. My heart was screaming but the fun factor for the day was high so it was even steven. The last time I strapped on snowshoes was over two years ago. The technique of running with snowshoes came back really quick. I was psyched. What I wasn’t counting on was that my hip flexors would completely shut down at 7 km. Training works and I didn’t train for the sport specific event. So, I used my Ironman shuffle to get me home to the line with a smile on my face.

I will be doing more of the Yeti’s next year and possibly train for a few.
See you on the trails!
Peter
