Shaun F*%#ing White..

March 8th, 2010 by admin

Talk about on top of the world. If you think about it, there is really no other spokesperson for his generation. No actor, no musician, no basketball star…This kid is it – this is the spokesperson for the neXt generation. And his sponsorship dollars reflect that. He earned more money from sponsorships last year that any quarterback in the NFL.

This is Shaun’s second cover on Rolling Stone and it’s a pretty cool one. The photos show Shaun wearing his Olympic gold medal, setting fire to his snowboard and playing air guitar Hendrix-style in a pair of skin-tight stars and stripes pants.

When Red Bull builds you your own half-pipe in the Rocky Mountains so you can have private, uninterrupted training sessions, you know you’re the real deal. The Shaun White phenomenon is in full affect now.

2010 Iditarod Starts Today

March 7th, 2010 by admin

The 2010 Iditarod kicks off today with the ceremonial start in Anchorage, Alaska. There is a deep and experienced field of 71 mushers set to hit the trail for the 38th annual running of this event that is called “The Last Great Race”, and is legendary the world over for its challenges.

With the ceremonial start out of the way, the true race will begin on Sunday from Willow, where the drivers, and their amazing sled dogs, will set off for Nome, some 1161 miles away. Being an even numbered year, the teams will take the Northern Route this season, which means they’ll pass through the remote villages of Cripple, Ruby, Galena, and Nulato along their way to the finish line, with traditional checkpoints in places like Rainy Pass, Rhon, McGrath, Ophir, and many others making their annual appearances as well.

The 1100+ mile course will take anywhere from 10-20 days to complete, depending on conditions out on the trail. The race is quite the test of endurance for both the mushers and their dogs, as they face howling winds, challenging mountain passes, blizzards, and white out conditions. Winners receive a cut of the purse, which varies from year to year, and a new pick-up truck, which comes in pretty handy in Alaska.

The top mushers to watch in the year’s race include three time defending champ Lance Mackey, who remains the best bet to win. Past champions Jeff King, Mitch Seavey and Martin Buser always remain threats to take it all, and of course, there always seems to be young, hungry challenger lurking in the pack.

Competitor Group Catches Up with Tony DeBoom…

March 5th, 2010 by admin

Nice write up on the Competitor Group website:

The DeBoom family has tasted sweet success in the sport of triathlon. While the multisport world knows about Tim DeBoom’s back-to-back Hawaiian Ironman victories in 2001 and 2002, older brother Tony was a top tier professional as well. A graduate from West Point Academy, Tony trained with the Army Special Forces – the Army Rangers – and once he completed his military commitment dove headfirst into triathlon racing. During his career, Tony won St. Anthony’s and Ironman Utah as well as finishing runner-up to brother Tim at Ironman California and serving as an alternate on the 2000 US Olympic Triathlon Team. It’s a Good year

March 5th, 2010 by admin

I can tell it’s gonna be a good year because our favorite label is pumping out alot of new albums in 2010. Brushfire just released ALO’s “Man of the World” and Rogue Wave’s “Permalight”. Now, Jack Johnson has announced a 2010 album, “To The Sea” and a 2010 World Tour. Look for Jack’s album in June. We did find a little ditty called “From the Clouds” that he performed recently for Rolling Stone. Made me immediatly grab my Larrivee and figure out the riff. Catchy stuff as usual.

The Yeti – Snowshoe race

March 4th, 2010 by PeterReid

The Yeti motivating the snowshoe runners

A couple of weeks ago I received an e-mail from BC mtb bike rock star Andreas, aka Dre, Hestler about joining him at The Yeti snowshoe champs.  One of my goals for this year is to do as many cool events as possible until a flying job pops up (flying float planes is what I do to put money in the bank).  Dre is one of my favourite characters on the coast so I thought about it for 1 minute and agreed.

The Race took place this past Saturday.  I figured with the running and cycling that I have been doing that I could easily get thru the 10 km event without too much trouble if I hung in the middle of the pack.  Within minutes of the gun going off I found myself beside the local legends:  Dre, Johnny F, Seamus M, and the always competitive Andrew Clarke.  I seem to be doing quite well with the snowshoes on the single track.  My heart was screaming but the fun factor for the day was high so it was even steven.  The last time I strapped on snowshoes was over two years ago.  The technique of running with snowshoes came back really quick.  I was psyched.  What I wasn’t counting on was that my hip flexors would completely shut down at 7 km.  Training works and I didn’t train for the sport specific event.  So, I used my Ironman shuffle to get me home to the line with a smile on my face.

I will be doing more of the Yeti’s next year and possibly train for a few.

See you on the trails!

Peter
